When it comes to choosing the right boarding school for their child, individual families remain responsible for making the decision they believe best suits their needs. Service personnel are no exception. They have access to the same wide range of information and resources available to all families to help guide their choice. In addition, they can seek support from the advisory team if they would like help in thinking through their options. However, it is important to note that specific schools are not recommended.

For some Service families, the mobility that comes with military life can have an impact on a child’s education. To help reduce disruption, some parents choose to place their child in a boarding school. In these circumstances, Service personnel may be eligible to claim an allowance from their employer to assist with the costs.

The Ministry of Defence maintains a Boarding School Database. This database lists schools that are currently attended by children of Service personnel who receive an allowance to help with fees. It is important to understand that the Ministry of Defence does not pay school fees directly. Payment of fees is always the responsibility of the parent.

If a Service person wishes to use an allowance at a school that is not yet included on the Ministry of Defence Boarding School Database, there is provision within the relevant Ministry of Defence policy to request that the school be added. The database should not be viewed as a list of schools selected or approved by the Ministry of Defence. Rather, it is simply a record of schools chosen by Service personnel who are in receipt of an allowance and have decided that those schools are the right fit for their children.
